How many of you are like me...feel guilt-ridden to do "nothing?"
"It is in this process of not being busy that one is free to contemplate, meditate, recharge and generally appreciate the world around them. A world which they are usually too busy to notice." Carl Hayes [http://www.suite101.com/content/health-benefits-of-rest-a51767]
I made a spontaneous decision recently to take a "short trip" and "long drive" from southern Indiana to Melbourne, FL to spend a couple of days with all of my family and celebrate my oldest nephew's graduation from college and licensed pilot. Three things caused me to make this spontaneous decision:
- Earlier in the morning before we left, my mother was taken by ambulance to the ER for symptoms similar to a heart attack...I was quickly reminded that life is WAY too short and family is WAY too important! She is fine - just a series of low blood sugar compounding anxiety and high blood pressure.
- The past few months have been unusually stressful with business and clients and I needed a break - but could I "afford" it? I realized, I couldn't afford NOT to take a break and REST! Study after study have been done that show, without doubt, the health benefits of rest. Now, don't get me wrong...I'm not proposing being LAZY...but a period of REST!
- I've had the distinct pleasure and honor of helping out a friend of mine with his young 12-year old son for the past few months. This has allowed me to hang out, play games, watch him play baseball, throw the baseball in the back yard, and just generally goof off...bowling is planned next. It's been a re-defining of priorities and LIFE for me and truly unexplained and unexpected enjoyment!
As a leader...I cannot stress to you the importance of resting. You will be a better person, leader, manager, employee, spouse, parent, and friend! Of course, the best rest is "resting in Him" as God calls us to do in Matthew 11:28,
"Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
