I pulled out a book I had read years ago entitled "Fail Safe Leadership" by Linda Martin & Dr. David Mutchler. They offer an extensive list of questions to determine if the leadership in your company might be failing. Here are my top 7 from the list (because I see these so often.)
Ask yourself these questions...Does your company have:
1. Excessive meetings
2. Micro-management
3. Duplication of effort
4. "Can't do" attitude
5. Misalignment/lack of coordinated effort
6. Communication problems
7. Reactive rather than proactive thinking
I can't tell you how often I work with a company and see these symptoms (and unfortunately many more) present. It both excites me and saddens me. You see, as with "AA" - recognizing the problem is the first step - and often a difficult step, but necessary. Then comes the work - the hard steps. What are you willing to do about it?
It saddens me because far too many companies don't see the need to change or don't know how to address the problems. The problems have become too big and over-powering and the company feels defeated.
It excites me because there is hope...with a few changes, your company can become succeeding in their leadership and their outcomes. Change often only happens when one gets too sick and tired of the way things are.
Where are you?
