Ethical Leadership

As I was reading through my e-mails this morning and catching up on various news feeds, an article caught my attention and I was drawn to read "the rest of the story."  The article was titled:

Gift to Focus on Ethical Leadership in Business

The overview of the article is that professional services organization Deloitte has made a financial gift to help establish an academic center at Notre Dame. At first glance and as someone who has worked with a number of non-profit organizations with their fundraising initiatives, I thought, "how wonderful for Notre Dame!"

Here's a brief except:
"The gift will be used to help establish the Notre Dame/Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership, a new academic center at the Mendoza College of Business that will focus on advancing ethical leadership in business, including research, thought leadership and the dissemination of practical ethics related content to the business community in the United States as well as around the world."

However, the more I read this article, the sadder I got. It is quite unfortunate that our society has been so damaged by the UNethical actions of so many leaders that a university must not establish a center to TEACH ethics. My heart is quite sad.

When did ethics and ethical behavior not become ingrained in all humans? Why do you think we, as a society, have so many offenses of unethical behavior of highly ranking leaders?
