- People are naturally lazy and need the threat of punishment to make them work and
- Kindness to employees will too often be interpreted as an invitation to slack off from the achievement of key business results.
These are not at all close to the way Jesus led or taught us to lead! He subscribed to "Theory Y" Management. [These concepts come from The Human Side of Enterprise by Douglas McGregor] In the foundation of "Theory Y," we see it based on compassion and kindness and raising those you lead to a higher level of needs and self-fulfillment. Helping the employee achieve their personal goals while working toward the organizations' goals.
I am firm believer in treating people right and helping them become better at who they are. Leading with compassion and kindness will only move leaders toward that end result.
Is compassion a leadership trait that you need to begin to exercise? If you're not sure, take a look at how you motivate your employees - is it through penalty or reward? And are those rewards tied to outcomes that THEY would want?
