We'll begin with Vision as it needs to be the foundation. Simply put, vision is the end goal-where you want to finish. Where you see your company. Why does your company exist. This is the target.
Supporting that vision is the Mission or Mission Statement. A company's mission is the road-map to achieve the Vision. Companies often have their mission statement posted throughout their buildings, printed on their website, on business cards, and employees can sometimes quote their company's mission statement. Let's do a quick pop quiz (sorry you didn't have a chance to study...) What company are these mission statements:
- “To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. If you have a body, you are an athlete."
- "to be the most successful computer company in the world at delivering the best customer experience in markets we serve."
- "To give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people"
- "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful."
- "To make people happy."
As a strategic thinker and leader, it is vital that you know your company's Vision & Mission because it is when armed with these two key ingredients that you can then begin to think strategically about the future. It is virtually impossible to evaluate risk, resources, clients' best interest, and staff for the future is you have no idea WHAT that future is (Vision.)
If you don't already know...make it your goal for today to find out your company's Vision and Mission. If your company doesn't have one...THAT is the first next step.
Until tomorrow when we'll look at your RQ - and no cheating on the pop quiz!
