Implementation...so what's the big deal?

Ideas, as they say, "are a dime a dozen," Douglas Horton. But, the REAL key to all these good ideas is implementing them. Without implementation these great ideas are just that - ideas. The only thing that can validate these perceived "good ideas" is the outcome and proof.

This is true with strategic thinking decisions as well. As we discussed yesterday, the "next first step" after the decision - is to communicate to the rest of the employees. Once the idea and decision is communicated, the exciting work begins. Here are three suggestions to help ensure implementation leads to success:
  1. Ensure that each and every employee is clear on his/her specific roles and responsibilities as it relates to the strategic thinking decision.
  2. Often strategic thinking decisions will result in change. Change is not usually a friendly word or situation for most. As you are communicating this decision/change and explaining individuals' and departments' roles and responsibilities...find a way to reassure your employees that they are valued and secure in your company! Remember - a good leader sees people over processes.
  3. The last suggestion I would offer you is to set SMART goals for various departments that result in the strategic thinking decision. (SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-sensitive)
Implementation is vital to success. I was shocked at this statistic:
"In today’s competitive business environment virtually all firms work diligently to analyze alternatives and to create a business strategy that enables competitive advantage. Once the strategy has been defined however, nine out of ten organizations fail to implement it effectively." SAP Business Object

NINETY percent! Unbelievable! Imagine what could happen if we increased that by just 20%.
