Is knowledge alone power? Or would you agree that APPLIED knowledge is power?
Do you believe you can improve any skill if you apply yourself? Golf? Tennis? Reading? Running? Biking? Bowling? I can go on, but you see where I'm going? Yes, there are some individuals who God created with a natural talent, but I believe anyone can improve a skill or talent by applying themselves...INCLUDING leadership.
You can go to any bookstore or Amazon link and find thousands or hundreds of thousands of books on leadership. John C. Maxwell even wrote a book entitled "21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader." You must set aside time and energy to develop your leadership skills. How do you do that? I'll suggest 3 easy steps:
STEP 1. Learn from other leaders.
Which leadership skills do you need to improve? Find out what leader around you is proficient in that skill and ask them to be your mentor. True leaders LOVE to mentor others. My Business Coach is launching a "Leaders are Learners Series." that you may want to check out...[http://christianmicroentrepreneurs.wordpress.com/cme-leaders/]
STEP 2: At the very core of a good leader is their people skills
Begin to develop this very important foundational skill. I'm reading a book by Jeff Peden called "Take It To The Max" that gives a great foundation in working with employees and transforming them to being a PART of your team. This is key to so many benefits inside your company as well as how they relate to those customers/clients and vendors outside the company. I recommend this read and then implement what you read...again, APPLIED knowledge. People are a company's greatest asset as we discussed in another blog.
STEP 3: Pay it forward
As a leader, continue to learn. The greatest way to learn is to teach...YOU find a young protege and begin to develop them into a leader. Attend seminars together. Go to networking events. Leaders need to constantly grow. They need to learn, read, see, and hear more ways of becoming effective.
Here are some basic leadership skills for you to develop. On a scale of 1-5...how do you rate yourself? How would those you lead rate you? Once you calculate those two...choose one skill and work on developing it this week. Need help - contact me and I'll help you.
